Mix & Match bridal party
If you’re aiming for a mix-and-match approach with your bridesmaid dresses there are quite a few ways to go about it!
STYLE: Ask yourself if you want different lengths for your bridesmaids or prefer all uniform lengths.
For example you can accomplish a mix and match look by offering the option of various hemliness or necklines, having each girl in a unique different style, girls in different textures & fabrics, alternating between 2-3 shades for your bridesmaids, in either same or different fabrics, or simply have your Maid of Honor stand out with a distinct dress from the other bridesmaids.
COLOR: This is the first question I would ask yourself if you’re trying to pull off a mix and match bridal party. Would you prefer your bridesmaids to wear the same color, variations of a similar color palette, or entirely different colors?
Your color choice will influence the types of fabrics you should consider for the dresses. In my case, I envisioned a color palette of neutral tones, in slight variations of shades of light champagne, oyster and ivory for my bridal party.
FABRIC: Should the bridesmaids' dresses be made of the same, similar, or entirely different materials? Keep in mind that different fabrics can affect how colors appear. If you desire uniformity in color, sticking to one fabric type is the best way to go about mix and match bridesmaid dresses.
However, if you're open to color variations, diversifying fabrics can be great for adding dimension and aesthetic.
If you’re going to offer the option for multiple different fabrics, I would definitely recommend approving each dress, and also putting examples into a canva mood board doc, similiar to this Bridesmaid FAQ.
That way you can make sure all of your girls know the vibe you are looking for, and this way your aesthetic stays on track and matches up to what you’re envisioning. You’ll also get alot less questions from your bridesmaids!
I’d also recommend picking a few brands that have a wide range of dresses that are designed to be mixed and matched together, and having your girls select from a specific company,if you don’t have the time to keep really on top of how the aesthetic is coming togeher and all matching up togeher.
A good example is Show Me your Mumu, Birdy Grey or Revelry to name a few. All of their dresses are designed to be mixed and matched, and you can also order color and fabric swatches from all of these companies before you send out the comms to all of your bridesmaids! That way you don’t have any buyers remorse so to speak on your selection, after your girls have already purchased their dresses!
PATTERN:This is the last step that I would address, after you’ve determined style, color and fabric. Do you want to offer the option to have a pattern ie)floral dress in the same color palette, or solid color only?
For our wedding, which was a modern formal destination wedding in Cabo, I knew I wanted all of my girls in Satin long gowns, so the mix match factor was focused around which color variation they wanted to choose between ivory, light champagne & oyster.
I also gave them creative liberty to choose any dress style, so long as it was a long gown and matched the color swatches I’d selected. I also sent each of them small swatches of the 3 colors to ensure they unerstood the assignment, and it turned out STUNNING!
